It means ‘I am happy’ in Italian. Upon hearing the news that the United States elected Donald Trump as President for the next four years I began to study Italian again. Sono felice was one of the first sentences I learned and I thought it was very significant for this moment in time. I’m not learning Italian because I want to become an expat to Italy, but because the election finally gave me the courage to start learning my own family history and looking into the process of dual-citizenship. Yes if all else fails, I will go to Italy but that’s not the point. I realize we all have different opinions regarding the election and that a large majority of us are unhappy with the results but hear me out. I am happy; we are still a unified country and for a lot of us, life as we know it will not change. We will still wake up in the morning to go to work or school, come hoe and eat dinner, go to sports games, etc. Any big changes will happen very slowly and there is no point fighting. We cannot change anything if we are all fighting. We must stick together and hold that we are all one; one person, one country and that above all, we all want freedom and equality. We must also see that we are already great as a country and that we must help others that do not hold the same rights as us. While I am happy with my current place in the United States, I know there is still much more to be done in terms of equality. We must recognize this and make strides to not let this happen again. History always repeats itself and it is bound to happen with Trump as our president. My only hope is that as young people we can come together and put aside our differences for the betterment of the United States. As a strong country we cannot be destroyed from the outside, Russia and North Korea are threats, yes, but our own people are more of a threat than they are. If the United States is ever destroyed it will be by our own people from a loss of freedoms. With this I repeat, I am happy.
I am happy because I know once January and February roll around that I will be able to practice freedom of speech and voice my opinion on policy changes.
I am happy because I will remain a citizen but retain the right to travel the world and help others who are being persecuted for who they are.
I am happy because I am still me and a President cannot change that.
I am happy and I am going to be happy for people who wanted Trump to be President because I know that it is not the end of the world.
I am happy because I know my rights as a United States citizen and I know how to freely practice them.
I understand that there are a lot of people who are unhappy with the outcome of this election and that’s okay. The only thing I ask is that you do not become like the other. Make sure that you are not continuing the persecution of people and that you respect others opinions. Remember, we become what we think about. Do not let hate take you over, show it out the door and become the most positive person you know.
As always, let me know your thoughts below in the comments.
